Selected Engineering Project

Custom Content
Management System

A lightweight commercial CMS created to support long-term website development, editorial workflows and continuous evolution.

The system started as an internal development tool and gradually became the production CMS behind hundreds of commercial websites.

The goal was not to give users unlimited freedom, but to provide a structured environment where producing a consistent, maintainable website became the easiest path.

Project

Custom commercial CMS

Role

Architecture, development and long-term evolution

Duration

10+ years of continuous development and production use

Why It Was Created

The original engineering problem

When this project started, the available CMS solutions did not match the way I wanted to build commercial websites. They were either too restrictive, too cumbersome or difficult to adapt to changing client requirements.

Instead of continuously working around those limitations, I created a lightweight CMS focused on performance, predictable editorial workflows and long-term maintainability.

Over time, what began as a development tool evolved into a working platform used for real commercial projects.

Evolution

From internal tool to long-running system

Development Workflow Problem

Existing CMS solutions did not fit the way I wanted to build commercial websites.

First CMS Version

A lightweight system created to support the development workflow I needed.

Commercial Website Projects

Used in real projects with real clients and real content requirements.

Editorial Workflow Improvements

Administration interface and content management became easier and safer for non-technical users.

SEO and Content Tools

SEO fields, meta data management and content structure tools were added.

Multilingual Website Support

Added multilingual content management with independent language versions.

Project-Specific Extensions

Flexible architecture allowed adding new functionality for different project needs.

10+ Years of Continuous Evolution

The system continues to evolve through new projects, requirements and experience.

Why It Was Designed This Way

Key Design Choices

Built for Evolution

The CMS was not designed as a fixed product with a closed feature set.

It evolved through real commercial requirements, allowing new functionality to be added gradually without replacing the entire system.

Guided Content Editing

The system intentionally limits editing capabilities instead of exposing every possible formatting option.

Visual page builders, unrestricted rich-text editing and design controls were deliberately avoided. Editors work within project-specific templates that preserve the website's structure and visual consistency.

The objective was not maximum editing freedom, but predictable quality.

Protected Editorial Workflow

Editors should manage content, not redesign websites.

The administration interface separates content management from presentation, allowing non-technical users to update websites without accidentally breaking layouts, templates or the visual identity established during development.

Structured Flexibility

Every website follows the same administration principles while allowing project-specific page templates, multilingual content, SEO fields and custom content areas.

Instead of making every website identical, the CMS provides a consistent editing model that adapts to different commercial projects.

Recovery-first Design

Content editing mistakes are inevitable in long-running commercial websites.

Instead of assuming users will never make mistakes, the CMS gradually introduced recovery features such as version history and restoration of texts, files and images.

The objective was not only to prevent problems, but also to make them easy to reverse.

Long-term Production Use

Software that kept evolving

The CMS continued evolving because every new commercial project introduced new practical requirements.

New functionality was introduced only when it solved recurring problems observed during real commercial projects.

Features such as multilingual support, content recovery, version history and SEO tools appeared gradually as practical requirements emerged rather than as part of a predefined roadmap.

Over the years, the platform has been used as the production CMS for several hundred commercial websites.

Multilingual websites · SEO fields · templates · content tools · file management

Confidentiality

Commercial Confidentiality

This overview intentionally omits client-specific business information, individual website names, implementation details and proprietary logic. Its purpose is to demonstrate the engineering approach behind a long-running CMS while respecting commercial confidentiality.
